If your WiFi is strong by the router and useless in the back bedroom, the fix is almost never a bigger router. In a large home you need multiple access points placed to cover the whole footprint, and in most cases you want them wired back to your network instead of leaning on wireless hops.

That is the short version. Here is what actually goes into getting solid signal in every corner of a big house.

Why does one router leave dead spots in a big house?

A single router broadcasts from one spot. The signal weakens as it pushes through walls, floors, and furniture, and by the time it reaches the far end of a large home it has very little left.

Older homes around Saratoga Springs make this worse. A lot of the houses near downtown and up around the North Broadway area have plaster walls, and plaster with wire lath behind it eats WiFi signal for breakfast. Add a second or third floor and the router in the basement office is fighting a losing battle.

New builds out toward Wilton and Malta have their own issue. The square footage is spread out, so even without plaster you are asking one radio to cover a footprint it was never designed to reach.

How does a mesh system fix it?

Mesh means you place several access points around the house, and they work together as one network. Your phone or laptop hands off from one to the next as you move around, and you stay on the same network name the whole time.

The key is placement. I walk the house first and figure out where the weak spots are, where the wired connections can go, and where each node needs to sit to actually cover the rooms you use. Dropping nodes in random outlets is how you end up with a system that still has dead zones.

The other big piece is how the nodes talk to each other. They can do it wirelessly, or you can wire them back to your main router. Wired is better every time you can pull it off.

Wired backhaul or wireless? What is the difference?

When mesh nodes talk to each other over WiFi, they use up some of the same airtime they are supposed to be handing to your devices. In a small house you might not notice. In a large house with a lot of walls and a lot of devices, that overhead adds up and your speeds sag.

Wired backhaul means running an Ethernet cable between the nodes. Each access point gets a clean, dedicated line back to the network, so all of its wireless capacity goes to your devices instead of to talking to the other nodes.

If your house already has Ethernet in the walls, we use it. If it does not, I look at where cable can be run cleanly. Sometimes that means fishing wire through a chase or an unfinished basement ceiling, sometimes it means being smart about which nodes get wired and which stay wireless. That is a judgment call I make once I have seen the layout.

Good WiFi installation in Saratoga Springs is mostly about getting these decisions right for your specific house, not about which box you buy off the shelf.

What do you look at when you come out?

Before I quote anything I want to see the house. Here is what I am checking:

  • The size and layout, including how many floors and how they are laid out
  • Wall construction, because plaster and brick change everything
  • Where your internet comes in and where the modem and router live now
  • Whether there is existing Ethernet I can use for backhaul
  • How many devices you run, and the heavy hitters like 4K streaming, cameras, and video calls
  • The spots that matter to you most, like a home office, a media room, or the back deck

That last one counts. Plenty of folks around here want signal out on the porch or in a detached garage or barn, which is common on the bigger lots north and west of town. That is doable, but I need to know it going in so I plan for it.

Will this help with outdoor coverage and cameras?

Yes, and it is worth thinking about together. If you already have or plan to add security cameras, a solid network is the backbone that keeps them reliable. A camera that keeps dropping off WiFi is usually a coverage problem, not a camera problem.

Same goes for smart home gear. Thermostats, locks, lights, and speakers all lean on your network. When the WiFi is patchy, all of that gets flaky, and it is easy to blame the devices when the real issue is coverage.

So when I plan a network for a large home, I ask what else you are running or plan to run. It is a lot cheaper to size the system right the first time than to redo it later.

What does it cost to cover a large home?

I am not going to throw a number at you, because it would be a guess. What drives the price is how big the house is, how many access points it needs, whether we can use existing wiring or have to run new cable, and how hard those cable runs are in your particular walls.

A ranch with an open floor plan and existing Ethernet is a very different job than a three-story plaster house with no wiring in the walls. Once I have walked the house and looked at the runs, I can give you a real number instead of a range that means nothing.
